This cache is located in the rugged Rio Grande Gorge, about 25 minutes by car from Taos, NM just north of the John Dunn Bridge. The road is rugged [best in a 4 wheeldrive] but the scenery is absolutely awesome.

It is an ideal cache for an adventurous family as well as a dedicated fly fisher.

The rivers and streams of northern New Mexico are world renowned for their high quality trout fisheries and are a favorite destination for anyone interested in Fly Fishing. The Rio Grande winds it's way from southern Colorado, through New Mexico, splitting the state in half on it's way through El Paso, TX and on to the Gulf of Mexico. In northern New Mexico, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, the river flows through the Rio Grande Rift, a crack in the earth caused by on-going minor seismic activity. It is here, where several cold mountain streams converge that a little known fishery exists. Just south of where the Red River flows through the New Mexico State fish hatchery and joins the Rio Grande,is perhaps the best kept fishing secret in New Mexico. Near Taos, Northern Pike find the coldwaters of the Rio Grande and the abundant food source [the trout] to be an ideal breeding grounds. This area is the best natural Pike hatchery in the State of New Mexico. If you're going to try your luck with the Pike, I recommend using a 9' 8-10 weight rod using the chartreuse Barry Reynolds Pike Fly in spring, or any Bass Fly in the summer. Please note that lightweight trout gear [8' 5wt] will not handle this fish.

If you're going to pursue Northern Pike in northern New Mexico, I highly recommend reading "Pike on the Fly" by Barry Reynolds. You can order it from Amazon.com for about $14.00

The cache is a medium sized, clear Rubbermaid container with a blue lid. When I left it, it contained:

The hike to the cache is somewhat rigorous as the large basalt rocks that have fallen from the rim of the gorge are difficult to climb. The footing can be slippery, and it's pretty easy to end up in the river [depending on the time of year, this can be very dangerous]. Beware of snakes and always be mindful of the roaring river. Please sign the Logbook, and if you'd like, please provide any anecdotes regarding your quest.

I'll eagerly watch for feedback.

Good Luck!
